Bison and a bear.

A lovely but cold start in Yellowstone today. First stop Mud Volcano and Dragon's Mouth Spring.

Dragon's Mouth Spring really did sound like a dragon breathing.

We then travelled through Hayden Valley looking for wildlife. We had been told that a grizzly bear had a bison carcass and it was possible to spot it from the road. We did see the bear but it was sleeping and quite hard to spot even with binoculars. We managed to see dozens of Bison up close.

We continued to The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Quite a spectacular canyon, unfortunately it was not very clear to see due to smoke from fires in Glacier National Park many miles away near the Canadian border.

We had viewed the Canyon from Artists Point but it was mobbed with coach loads of tourists. We spotted a 1 mile trail to Point Sublime but a sign warned of bears and we'd left the bear spray in the car. We then met a man on his own from New York who was also looking at doing the hike. We hiked together, apparently it's much safer to hike in a group of 3 when there is a chance of encountering a bear. The trail offered great views but we never did find Point Sublime and turned back after 45 mins.

On our return through Hayden Valley we saw the grizzly bear (a very back grizzly) on the move. Quite a distance away but great to watch.

  1. The canyon looks spectacular.

I think Tim thought you'd look more appetising to a bear.

    1. I would have been more juicy than Tim and much easier to catch.

    1. Always great to see a bear, at a distance! Somewhere to add to your 'must visit' list Rachel.
