Angels Landing is one of the most popular trails in the park but the last half mile involves crossing a narrow ridge with a 1000 ft drop at either side! We decided it wasn't the trail for us so looked for an alternative. Another early start to catch two shuttle buses before the park became too busy. We (I say we but I mean me) had chosen to hike to Observation Point. We started at 9am for the 8 mile round trip, 4 miles up 4 miles down.
The first mile was quite steep then we entered Echo Canyon.
The trail continued with some steep drops at the side.
About 2 1/2 hours later we reached the top. We spent close to 1 hour enjoying the view and of course having a pic nic.
We were at such a height we could actually look down on Angels Landing.
Looking down we could see how the trail we had hiked up was carved into the mountain side.
We enjoyed the views on the way down and glad that we had started early as the temperature was rising fast.
Back to the hotel in time for a well deserved rest.
Wow, fantastic views! When we last went to Zion we had the kids with us so didn't do many proper hikes - we definitely need to go back! Is that Zion Lodge?
ReplyDeleteThe view was definitely worth the effort and we hiked alone the majority of the trail. We didn't stay in the park but in Springdale near the entrance at the Desert Pearl Inn, lovely hotel.
DeleteWow, I love Zion; it was definitely Angels Landing that I did, although Observation point looks spectacular.
